The new Manufacturing Technical Training Centre at University of Ballarat (MTTC)
is a TAFE education facility which consolidates articulated learning
pathways in manufacturing technology.
The centre will be a regional focal point for the future of mechanatronics, robotics and
computer automation, alongside skills based training in manufacturing, welding metal and mechanical fabrication.
The sculptured building form is analogous to a component machined from a metal block with the ‘fractal’ external cladding conceived from the nano-texture of metal at a microscopic level. The aspiration is to create a new learning facility for the 21st Century which celebrates the education of manufacturing and enables a ‘public’ interface between students, teachers, industry and passerby.
Integral to the building design and it’s operation, a range of environmental solutions have been incorporated; ‘activated’ radiant slab heating and cooling, natural ventilation, ‘super’ insulation, solar water heating and rainwater storage to take advantage of Ballarat’s micro-climate.
