Consistent with the influences of modern pedagogy, the design of this building demonstrates a didactic aesthetic.

The environmentally responsive form, refined surface treatment and confident use of colour display an iconic vision for collaborative learning. La Trobe University, GOTAFE and the Greater Shepparton City Council identified an opportunity to create a tertiary education precinct in the heart of Shepparton. Sculpturally, this building responds to both master planning and environmental complexities.

La Trobe University is located at the edge of the Shepparton Town centre campus. It is a joint venture between La Trobe University and Goulburn Ovens GOTAFE and is intended to stimulate further development of an aspect of the campus previously isolated from other existing facilities. The facility contains a series of flexible learning and administration spaces serving the Health Sciences and Economics Faculty, in addition to providing a cafe, bookshop and variety of student commons and study areas.

Internally, the design utilises a mixture of adaptable learning spaces and specialist wet and dry labs for technical studies. All spaces are designed to accommodate a range of activities, from graphic design and textiles, to engineering classes and maths. The dynamic floorplans over each level offer a range of indoor and outdoor informal learning spaces, while the colour palette has been kept intentionally minimal – working with greys, greens, whites and light timbers. High ceilings and open walkways create light, bright, uplifting spaces in tune with modern learning.

“If you live in the Goulburn Valley, La Trobe University offers flexibility, progressive and modern facilities.”
Elizabeth Lavendar - Director, La Trobe University Shepparton
