The BMW South Melbourne flagship showroom sought to grow and refine their luxury car brand’s presence. The client’s vision included expanding the showroom toward Kingsway and removing the existing forecourt to bring all displays indoors. Gray Puksand was engaged to deliver the extension and repurposing of the existing showroom including a new building and full-scale interiors. This project resulted in a complete overhaul of the previous BMW dealership and showroom, now grouping BMW, Mini and Motorrad under one roof.

The showroom is the first in Australia, and one of only five BMW outlets in the world at the time of its opening to use the new corporate identity and create a world-class retail site. Gray Puksand’s design team incorporated a minimal and classic material palette with black framing, white render and white aluminium paneling in line with the BMW standard design manual.

Clean, crisp, symmetrical lines are offset by expansive clear glazing panels. By contrast, the adjacent MINI showroom offers a raw, more industrial materiality with exposed concrete, black perforated panelling and heavier expression in the framing.

The handover bays for BMW have been designed to further support the customer experience with provision for up to six handovers at a given time within a large, open area.
