Green walls create a sense of arrival for a refurbished laneway.

Dexus engaged Gray Puksand to design the upgrade for the retail laneway between Albert Street and Elizabeth Street in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD.

The brief called for seating to be added to service the small Asian restaurants which open into the space, an awning for weather protection at the open end of the lane and two green walls to complete the scheme.

New finishes and lantern-style light fittings complement the dining options while the new awning and green walls effectively create a warm and inviting indoor space and informal point of arrival that draws passersby into the laneway.

A lengthy upholstered bench seat, café-style tables and chairs, timber panelling, wallpaper and bronze mirrors soften the once drab corridor while a new timber ceiling imbues a sense of symmetry and order. The refurbished lane has encouraged diners to settle in and relax, and has changed the way they engage with the space.
